The philosophy behind DrumCrazy begins with connection. We connect with others in order to communicate and use our connection with others as a vehicle for our communication. Communication is at the heart of all education and of course is the prime purpose of music making.
All music is connected to a pulse. By connecting to the pulse we are connecting with the basis of the music, and through that with everyone in the group. Once we are part of the music making team, all sorts of creative possibilities open up.
At the start of any DrumCrazy session the facilitator is helping everyone to make that connection with each other. Through that connection with each other, pulse and rhythm will inevitably emerge. Without this connection all attempts to create music together will flounder.
When I asked children recently what you might do if you felt the music wasn't working any more, a boy of 8 years old said, “Stop playing, look around, find the beat and come back in.” Very simple and straightforward from a child's perspective.
The beat or pulse is fundamental: When we consciously connect with it we are at the same time connecting with everyone else in the room, we are connecting with all the rhythms that are already there, we are becoming a part of the whole.
